Ax Lore: Historic Tools from the John and Brenda Henson Collection
Celebrating centuries of blacksmithing skill, this selection of European and American tools complements the contemporary work in the Woodson's concurrent show, IRON. Before the industrial revolution, hand-forged iron tools were designed and made by blacksmiths the world over. These artisans were respected for their skill in manipulating iron, and later steel, into everyday objects that helped shape our existence. Tools on view from the Henson Collection range from a 1,000-year-old Nordic battle ax to an eighteenth-century ship builder’s ax as well as anvils used by blacksmiths to make axes and armor in bygone times
