The exhibition follows the audacious career of fashion designer Todd Thomas, starting with his story-like, local beginning here in Saint Louis. Currently, Thomas occupies a glittering position in the world of fashion, and he credits Saint Louis with establishing his creative foundation during the relatively brief but productive period he spent here in the early 1980s. It was the pinnacle of a kind of Do-it-Yourself Renaissance in Saint Louis, where anything was possible for young artists, clothing makers and performers, all of whom found endless inspiration in each other and what they were doing.

The artwork presented in this three-person show at Santa Fe Clay is inhabited by emotion and spirit. Sandra Byers, Jennifer McCurdy, and Susan Schultz bring SFC all white work.

Janis’ work is the result of a laborious and challenging process. Similar to scrafftio, where a design is scratched through a colored ground revealing another color beneath; to produce the image Janis sifts black glass powder onto sheet glass, scraping away the powder to produce the detail. The image is suspended between layers of sheet glass and fired in a kiln to fuse the constituent pieces together. In this manner any number of images can be combined to produce complex juxtapositions. The result is a collage produced entirely in glass, built from a time-consuming process allowing for an extended contemplation of his subjects.
