In a discussion at Art Basel 2007, Massimiliano Gioni, the curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, referred to Art Basel Miami Beach as the “fake Art Basel.” Dioni seems to be alone in his thoughts because last week tens of thousands of collectors clamoring to buy, celebrities wanting to be seen and people simply looking to participate in all the excitement invaded Miami for a non-stop week of exhibits, parties and events. With Design/Miami running concurrently and a variety of other art fairs, design shows and exhibitions piggybacking on the two main events, the city was overwhelmed with ...

Perspective
The biggest and most joyous craft event of the year is staged every September on a gigantic playa, a clay lakebed over 30,000 years old, in the middle of Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada. This is the site of the Burning Man festival (Aug. 31-Sept. 7, 2009). I have wanted to attend for 10 years. Having regularly read about it and discussed it with veteran “burners,” I thought I had a good idea of what to expect. But it was a hundred times more than I imagined. It cannot be fully explained; it can only be experienced. Here ...

On Our Radar
Stephanie DeArmond’s sculptural letterforms are not easily defined by art-school limitations of sculpture, vessel and design. Her work humorously appropriates text from American subculture and abstracts it into aesthetic form, as in Cross-stitch T. DeArmond’s sculpture evokes the preciousness and innocence of your grandmother’s china cabinet, yet a closer reading reveals unexpected phrases, like that in Best/Beast. The artist often cites lyrics taken directly from American pop-cultural forces like hip-hop and indie rock. “I use rap lyrics because I am interested in connecting that kind of culture to fine china,” she says. “I love the idea of rappers with gold ...

In the late winter of 2007, a remarkable rescue occurred in New York’s Hudson River Valley. After nearly three years of existing on the precipice of demolition, Crow House, the hand-built home and studio of the once-renowned painter and potter Henry Varnum Poor (1887-1970) ultimately was saved by Christopher St. Lawrence, Town Supervisor of Ramapo, New York. And though St. Lawrence quietly acknowledges his role in this feat, he might also be tempted to tell you his mother made him do it. After all, it was his 88-year-old mother, Marguerite, who first read of the historic home’s plight in the ...

Still buzzing from one of the most exciting presidential elections in recent (or even not so recent) memory, I jumped a plane out of LaGuardia on Thursday morning and headed to Chicago for what what would surely be one of the most exciting SOFA Chicago exhibitions in years. (For the uninitiated, SOFA is an acronym for Sculptural Objects and Functional Art.) Celebrating its 15th year, SOFA Chicago is now not only one of the longest running weekend long (from November 7th to 9th) shows featuring contemporary arts and design but can now proudly proclaim ...

An eclectic, somehow quintessentially L. A. fusion of art, design and fashion (with a dash of politics and showbiz) marked the coming-out bash for Kristen Lee and Joe Cole’s store TenOverSix on October 16, during Los Angeles Fashion Week. Fashionistas flocked to inaugurate the new multi-label accessories boutique, a corner space on trendy Beverly Boulevard (a decidedly “blue” neighborhood, as demonstrated by the store’s several large displays celebrating Barack Obama). Guests browsed the merchandise (think high-end, high-concept shoes, bags and jewelry) then partied in the moonlit courtyard of the eccentrically configured building, which also houses a ...

When we first met the Milwaukee-based crafter and gallerist Faythe Levine back in 2006, she was an unknown, budding filmmaker on a mission to chronicle the new wave of DIY craft. Two years and many YouTube teaser clips later, her highly anticipated, feature-length documentary, Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft, and Design, is about to make its debut at film festivals in January and at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York on February 12. She also has a new book out (same title as ...
