As we get geared up for the American Craft Council’s largest show of the year we offer a sneak peak at just a few of the makers you’ll find on the floor in Baltimore. Look for more sneak peaks tomorrow and more updates from the show floor directly. But we recommend a visit for yourself. ...

For a first-time visitor, the American Craft Council’s Baltimore Show can be somewhat overwhelming - in the best possible way. I experienced that today when I entered the Baltimore Convention Center for a sneak peek at the exhibitors in our 34th annual show. I was immediately struck not only by the sheer number of artists, but also by the eclectic variety of the work on display. It’s an incredible sensory experience to encounter exquisitely handcrafted goods in such a range of colors, shapes, textures and materials. I found it hard to make any progress through the show - I kept ...

Sometimes, not often but sometimes, I get jealous. This is one of those times. While I’ve been pretty proud of the podcasts we’ve been posting lately, Etsy has been doing some great work over at Storque , their “Handmade Blog,” and today they really scored. Take a look at the video they recently posted featuring Bruce Metcalf. It is part of their “Handmade Life” series and they have done a really beautiful job capturing not only Metcalf’s personality but also the personality of his work. They have been ...

The cult illustrator Robert Crumb-“R. Crumb,” as he signs his work-holds a special place in the hearts of baby boomers. What ’60s kid didn’t gaze in awe at his cover art for Big Brother and the Holding Company’s Cheap Thrills album (marveling every time at Janis Joplin’s cleavage), paste a “Keep on Truckin” sticker on a school notebook, or delight in the idea of a naughty comic strip starring a feline rake named Fritz the Cat? The New York artist Joseph Cavalieri has been reminded of just how powerfully this era-defining art still resonates, ...

American Craft Week, a joint project of Craft in America and CRAFT (Craft Retailers and Artists for Tomorrow), starts this Friday, October 1. The American Craft Council is a proud major sponsor. We'll be in Minneapolis, celebrating the grand opening of the Council's new office and toasting the 2010 Aileen Osborn Webb Award recipients, but as the 10-day celebration of all things craft unfolds, we're excited to check out local offerings--such as the Northrup King Building's fine craft exhibit and design event. If only we could be everywhere at once! Behold just a smattering of the fun: In Oakland, CA, The Crucible, ...

The Oregon College of Art and Craft and Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland’s two oldest art colleges, have teamed to offer a joint MFA in Applied Craft and Design. This historic program may offer a glimpse into the future of arts education in America as it explores the fusion of tradition, innovation and practice with design theory and hands-on making. Applications for the inaugural class, a 60 credit, two-year program beginning in fall 2009, will be accepted until March 15. Housing will be available in the Pearl district of Portland, conveniently located ...

Get your popcorn ready. The third season of Craft in America kicks off two weeks from today, Tuesday evening, May 24, with the episode "Messages," featuring jeweler/sculptor Thomas Mann, santero Charles Carrillo, bead artist Joyce Scott, and glass artist Beth Lipman. For anyone not acquainted, the series, which airs on PBS, is just one arm of the Los Angeles-based Craft in America nonprofit, which also runs a public Study Center, works with educators, has published a book, and organized exhibitions. (We're proud to see lots of ACC member-artists in CIA's slick virtual exhibitions, too.) So the burning ...

Why is craft seemingly less prestigious than fine art? That's a question that often hangs in the air whenever studio craft people - artists, curators, and academics - get together to talk about the field. This weekend, at the CraftForward conference and pre-conference convenings at California College of the Arts, was no exception. Underneath the question about craft and prestige is another question, tinged with frustration: Why won't fine art acknowledge and embrace craft the way it deserves be acknowledged and embraced? Now, I don't want to minimize the pain of a talented artist who feels unrecognized because he or she ...

BY JENNY GILLIn the December/January issue of American Craft, freelance writer Meribah Knight looked back on her grandmother's sewing circle as a source of early inspiration for her own craft practice. The American Craft Council’s News & Views asked Meribah to share her favorite holiday craft tradition, memory or object. She wrote, "I have many holiday craft memories—gold spray-painted macaroni tree ornaments, angels made out of Sculpey—but the most consistent is my grandmother Hortense Lasky’s embroidered Christmas stocking. This object, with its intricate stitching of a jolly snowman reading a book to a fox, a bunny and a ...

Craft has long been connected to home, and to the hand. Now one could say that craft is connected to home, hand and Internet. The web is often cited as a reason for and enabler of the DIY craft movement: its speed and ubiquity drives people to tune out through slow handcraft, but it also connects crafters to each other and thus grows the movement, the theory goes. Craft, the DIY movement asserts, is a lifestyle, one centered on the belief that you should make what you need (or want), through creative efforts that are environmentally sustainable and reflect your ...

At the beginning of January The New York Times ran an article by Michael Cannell titled Design Loves a Depression. The title, of course, was a doozy and the timing just right to spark a multitude of incensed designers/makers/artists and others in the industry to lash out at the author for his perceived insensitive ways. It didn’t take long for Murray Moss, one of the most visible (if not always the most vocal) design/art/craft ambassadors, to pen a rebuttal on the stellar site Design Observer. Design Hates a Depression ...

Still buzzing from one of the most exciting presidential elections in recent (or even not so recent) memory, I jumped a plane out of LaGuardia on Thursday morning and headed to Chicago for what what would surely be one of the most exciting SOFA Chicago exhibitions in years. (For the uninitiated, SOFA is an acronym for Sculptural Objects and Functional Art.) Celebrating its 15th year, SOFA Chicago is now not only one of the longest running weekend long (from November 7th to 9th) shows featuring contemporary arts and design but can now proudly proclaim ...
