Six Architectural Designers. Six Potters. Interaction with and occupation of space is paramount to both groups.
It has been asserted by some, that design is separated from craft by straining it through a colander, removing any personal disclosure or kitsch. What if we set aside divisive ideas and came together in such a way as to broaden a community?
Red Lodge Clay Center has asked the Architectural Designers SJ Sheppard, Henry Sorenson, Peter Stempel, Angie Lipski, Ross Hammand and Zuzanna Karczewska to meditate upon the work of Potters Simon Levin, Jeff Oestreich, Hiroe Hanazono, Naomi Cleary, Lisa Orr and Ryan Greenheck. ...

Have you ever wondered where to find the recipe for baker's clay, what a fire proximity coverall looks like, or what is performance sculpture?
Whether you have asked yourself these questions or not, I can't resist telling you about the first phase of the American Craft Council Library's digital projects: making our Council newsletter collection accessible online. Detailing craft history in America from 1957-1986, these newsletters account for major events, important individuals' involvement, as well as movements and trends in modern American craft.
Currently I am in the throes of the digitization process, happily lost among the stacks of archival boxes. ...

Andrew Gilliatt's latest body of work makes me want to scream, in that "I scream for ice cream" kind of way. I don't really scream for ice cream, but never mind that. When I look at his tumblers, cereal bowls, mugs, and platters - elegant, iterative forms, yet each one unique in its imaginative combination of colored slip, glazes, resist patterns, and decals - I'm transported back to the ice cream shop in the town where I grew up, face and hands pressed against the glass case of my monitor, mesmerized by all the sweet options.
I dare you to ...

A coterie of South African ceramic artists representing contemporary and ancestral Zulu pottery traditions will converge at The Hotchkiss School in northwestern Connecticut on May 14 and 15, 2011, for "Clay - The Art of Earth and Fire," an international symposium organized by ceramicist and educator Delores Coan, a member of the Hotchkiss arts faculty. The two-day conference, subtitled South Africa: New and Traditional Works of Zulu Pottery, brings together vibrant modern works from the famed Ardmore Ceramic Art studio in the midlands of KwaZulu-Natal with the richly somber, hand-fired Zulu ukhambas (beer vessels) created by rural ...

Cynthia Bringle doesn't hesitate to take center stage at the potter's wheel. As one of the first female clay artists to set up shop in the Memphis area in the 1960s, Bringle found that inviting curious members of the community into her studio to watch her work was the best way to gain acceptance and patrons. As a woman earning her living making pottery when being a wife and mother was the norm, she faced challenges and naysayers. But Bringle never lost her confidence or doubted her calling in life.
"This is what I like doing," she explains. "I decided to ...

The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts just wrapped up its 60th anniversary celebration this past Sunday; it was a weekend filled with presentations, exhibitions (many of which are still up), the annual Bray Benefit Auction, and - from the reports trickling in - loads of fun. I would have given my eye teeth to attend (though finalizing our own 70th anniversary issue for the printer was a thrill, too). But of all the reports, I am most moved by this piece of news: The Bray raised more than $500,000 this weekend. What a dazzling ...

Red Lodge Clay Center brings together the work of John Williams, Katherine Taylor and Daniel Bare. Each artist creates with a regard for human/landscape interactions as a point of departure. From here paths diverge while continuing to remain complementary and relevant. Definitions of boundaries, assessment of the impact caused by the "human vs. nature" interaction and the precise queries, which are the result of said interaction, vary. Naturally, it follows that the resulting objects are equally varied and result in a visual debate. Placing the works side-by-side, their disparate visual conclusions may be accentuated, providing a verdant ...

Jenny Topolski works in a variety of mediums (clay, metal, paper, and textiles), but her aesthetic is uniquely her own. Not all of her work is nautically-inspired, but something about the octopus wall sconce spoke to me. You can see more of her work on Etsy, and she'll be at the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn, NY this weekend.

What originally drew me to Josie Jurczenia's ceramics was the birch-looking handle of the teapot in her Birch Tea Set. Looking through more of her work, I really took a liking to her playful but not too playful aesthetic. Jurczenia's decades of work in textiles (she's a founder of the Sweet Potatoes children's' clothing line) comes across in the variety of patterns and finishes on her ceramics. She makes work that is beautiful and functional, and to me, that's what craft is all about.
