At the American Craft Council Show in San Francisco, held August 13-15, the Council presented four Awards of Excellence. The recipients, selected from more than 250 exhibitors, were Geoffrey Giles (jewelry, metal) of Asheville, NC; Reiko Ishiyama (jewelry, metal) of New York, NY; and Jane Sisco (fashion wearables) of Evanston, IL. Peggy Loudon (ceramics) of Arcata, CA, received the award for booth design. The jurors were Deborah Valoma, a textile artist who is director of fine arts and an associate professor at California College of the Arts, and Curtis Arima, a metalsmith and instructor at the same college. This year marks the 70th anniversary of American Craft magazine, a public voice of the American Craft Council, which is celebrating along with us. Actually, the origins of both entities are a little more complicated. American Craft magazine began life in 1941 as an unnamed, 27-page newsletter, published by the Handcraft Cooperative League of America, led by Aileen Osborn Webb. (That group incorporated in 1939, but traces its genesis, with Webb as a prime mover, to 1929.) The American Craft Council’s 34th annual flagship show at the Baltimore Convention Center this February featured the newest jewelry, clothing, furniture and home décor by 700 of the country’s leading craft artists, such as last year's winner Ani Kasten, who created Bottle Still Life. Beyond shopping opportunities, there were also new networking events on wholesale days and live demonstrations during the retail portion of the show. Coming Changes The American Craft Council has announced plans to relocate from New York City to Minneapolis by July 2010. Citing the high cost of doing business in Manhattan and the vibrancy of the Twin Cities craft community, Leilani Lattin Duke, board chair, said, “The move ensures that the Council can achieve its mission of championing contemporary American craft throughout the U.S. while effectively managing operational costs.” Andrew Glasgow, who joined ACC in October 2007, resigned as executive director effective Nov. 1 for health reasons. The American Craft Show BaltimoreAs a new year approaches, the Council is busy preparing for its 34th annual show in February at the Baltimore Convention Center, the largest juried, indoor craft show in the nation. Craft was certainly in the air on October 1, a lovely fall evening, for the ACC's opening party at its new headquarters in the historic Grain Belt Brewhouse in northeast Minneapolis. ACC Hits the Road Executive director Chris Amundsen is leading listening sessions with ACC members and other craft enthusiasts in six cities - Philadelphia, Atlanta, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Houston, San Francisco, and Portland, Oregon - to kick off the Council's strategic planning process. Amundsen will use the sessions to deepen the Council's understanding of opportunities and challenges in the craft field and to shape an all-member survey, to be distributed in the first few months of 2011. Transition AccomplishedAs we went to print on the October-November issue, the American Craft Council was taking root at its new location in Minneapolis. Located in the Grain Belt Brewery building, home of RSP Architects, in the city's Sheridan neighborhood, the Council's office is a comfortable fit in an up-and-coming arts district, enabling the organization to continue its mission of championing contemporary American craft.
