Men and women for whom straight stitches and clean welds were matters of pride...As a people we do well when we make good things and not so well when we don't. This was once a country where we made things. Beautiful things. And so it is again." - TV Commercial for 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Look around you - stop and listen. 70-Year Craft Timeline
In the August/September issue of American Craft we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the magazine with a 70-year timeline of making. This is quite an ambitious undertaking for our new magazine staff as they scoured the ACC library and consulted with many craft luminaries to identify the significant moments that highlight craft's rich history. While there have been other timelines documenting craft, the significance of this timeline is that it identifies the cultural influences that have shaped craft and its social impact since 1940. Space is limited in our print version, but we are creating a digital version that ...

Since mid-January I have traveled extensively throughout the country and held listening sessions with ACC members and others in the craft field. As part of this initiative, I hosted 17 listening sessions in eight cities, hearing from more than 500 people. In addition, I read dozens of thoughtful letters and emails from folks who were not able to attend the meetings but wanted to be heard. First and foremost, I want to thank those who took the time to come to a listening session or otherwise communicate their concerns and suggestions to me. Your thoughts have provided critical ...

The ACC and Penland School of Crafts recently hosted a three-day convening at Penland to talk about the state of craft in our culture. Who came? Artists, gallery owners, academics, curators, writers, and other craft enthusiasts. Participants were asked in advance to respond spontaneously to a provocative question: Why craft now? Here are some of the answers we heard. Why Craft Now? I might rephrase the question to be: How do we infuse our society with the same regard for craft that we have? I think the answer to that is to portray craft as an attitude, a mindfulness that can ...

Why Craft Now? Why, indeed! Is it because craft adds to our understanding of our world? Does it make us more aware of how things in our lives come to be, bringing our attention to sustainability and responsible choices? Does it connect us to other fields, times, and places? Or does Craft simply enable a multitude of ways for expression? Read what our October Penland Convenings participants have to say on the subject. What do you think? We'd love to hear from you. More responses from Penland Convening participants Why Craft Now? I like to imagine that "craft" in this question ...

Is there a choice implied in this question? For some, making seems to be an imperative, a life-changing creative impulse. For others craft seems to be a way to address issues of sustainability, ethics, and politics, reaching beyond the craft field itself. Whatever the case or the cause, we are pleased to post the final responses from the participants in the Penland Convenings to the question posed. Why do you craft now? What do you think? We'd love to hear from you! Why Craft Now? - The Short Version - The Romanticism inherent in craft production got a bad rap ...
