In a discussion at Art Basel 2007, Massimiliano Gioni, the curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, referred to Art Basel Miami Beach as the “fake Art Basel.” Dioni seems to be alone in his thoughts because last week tens of thousands of collectors clamoring to buy, celebrities wanting to be seen and people simply looking to participate in all the excitement invaded Miami for a non-stop week of exhibits, parties and events. With Design/Miami running concurrently and a variety of other art fairs, design shows and exhibitions piggybacking on the two main events, the city was overwhelmed with ...

Material Matters
Human beings have used bricks for thousands of years. In 4000 BC, the ancient city of Ur (part of Mesopotamia, in what is now Iraq) was built almost entirely of brick. In the 1960s, on the other end of the utility spectrum, Carl Andre made minimalist brick-art installations. Michael Morgan's sculptural works are ingenious integrations that call on this history - brick as building material, brick as art. All of Morgan's creations - whether singular columnar forms like Tide Clock (1999) or the seven shoreline sculptures that make up Haverstraw Trophy (2005) - walk the line between man-made and ...

Perspective
The biggest and most joyous craft event of the year is staged every September on a gigantic playa, a clay lakebed over 30,000 years old, in the middle of Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada. This is the site of the Burning Man festival (Aug. 31-Sept. 7, 2009). I have wanted to attend for 10 years. Having regularly read about it and discussed it with veteran “burners,” I thought I had a good idea of what to expect. But it was a hundred times more than I imagined. It cannot be fully explained; it can only be experienced. Here ...

By E. Graeme Robertson and Joan Robertson Thames & Hudson $65 Were you to randomly open this reference work to any of its abundant, evocative illustrations—of balconies, say, in the French Vieux Carré in New Orleans or of bridges in Leningrad—you would likely be drawn into a deeper investigation of the subject matter. Reprinted directly from the first edition of 1977 and largely a photographic essay, all in black and white, the book has become a classic in the literature of architecture and design. Motivated to bring attention to the aesthetic value of a distinctive form of decoration, E. Graeme Robertson, ...

Editor’s Letter
For the first time in 80 years, no incumbent president or vice president is running for the highest office in the land. Come 2009 we will see a sitting senator roll into the White House for the first time since John F. Kennedy took over the Oval Office in 1961. And for the first time in the history of the United States, there is the very real possibility that we will address an African-American as “Mr. President.” With an extraordinary primary season behind us and no doubt an equally compelling electoral season ahead, it seems the perfect time to examine ...

At once conceptual and practical, models are an integral part of an architect's toolkit. By helping to guide experiments and encourage dialogue, they provide insight into the rigors of landscape and building design. Crafting Architecture brings together work from Bay Area design professionals and students, and explores how these architects and landscape architects use models and mock-ups to communicate create ideas. ...

In the late winter of 2007, a remarkable rescue occurred in New York’s Hudson River Valley. After nearly three years of existing on the precipice of demolition, Crow House, the hand-built home and studio of the once-renowned painter and potter Henry Varnum Poor (1887-1970) ultimately was saved by Christopher St. Lawrence, Town Supervisor of Ramapo, New York. And though St. Lawrence quietly acknowledges his role in this feat, he might also be tempted to tell you his mother made him do it. After all, it was his 88-year-old mother, Marguerite, who first read of the historic home’s plight in the ...

Heck Yes Craft
Donna Veverka has a monumental task at hand. Literally. She distills magnificent structures and transforms them into sleek, powerful forms to be worn. The former sculptor began her Architectural Ring series as she transitioned back to making jewelry in 2005, and all of her pieces exude her sense of architectural flair. So where does she get her inspiration? "I have always been interested in history and archeology," Veverka says. "When I travel, buildings and archeological sites are on top of my list. For me, it is one place that we can directly interact with the past. Architecture surrounds the ...

People & Places
Viktor Schreckengost, one of the greatest industrial designers of the 20th century, died January 26 in Tallahassee, Florida, at 101 years old. Seemingly every aspect of modern American life was touched by the millions of items manufactured from Schreckengost designs, from dinnerware, bicycles, and children’s pedal cars to printing presses and a radar recognition system for the U.S. Navy. He was also an accomplished potter, painter and sculptor, noted for his iconic Art Deco ceramic Jazz bowls of the 1930s. He believed in making good design available to everyone. In a conversation with William Daley published in American Craft in ...

Shop Talk
From Mumbai, India, where they met as students, to their home today in America's heartland, husband-and-wife team Sanjay and Jigna Jani have carried with them a core belief that inspiring objects all come from the same creative place, be it a building, handbag, painting or pot. At their architecture firm and gallery akar (Sanskrit for “forms and shapes”), they've put that philosophy into practice, offering a wide range of art and design with a specialty in ceramics, such as Jenny Mendes’s Friend Party and Joy Brown's Recliner with Head in Hand, which they regard as "the closest relative to ...
